Westin, Taipei. Photo by Amsk.I stayed at the Westin Taipei for two nights in November 2007. I used a SPG50 and got a room for 5,350 NT (which was about $169 at the time). After taxes it was about $195 a night. Since I am SPG Gold, I received a modest upgrade to a Guest Office room (basically a room with an office desk and chair).

The room was spacious and I was happy to see that the room was very clean. The room and the furniture looked fairly new and well kept. There were complimentary bottles of water and free fruit. There was a 32" flat panel TV although I didn't watch any TV. The bed was a standard Heavenly bed.

The front desk was very warm and welcoming and they all spoke very competent English. I also asked the concierge for some recommendations for shopping and restaurants and they were very helpful. Ask them for a free map of Taipei. The lobby has a bar and a restaurant that occasionally had live music playing which was a nice touch.

Westin Taipei Hotel Room. Photo by Amsk. The location of the hotel is fairly convenient. The hotel can be accessed by the Taipei MRT by walking a few blocks east to the Nanjing East station where you can board the Brown line. The Brown line will give you access to the rest of the transit system. There is a Starbucks just outside the hotel and a few convenience stores and ATMs around the corner. I walked around a bit but didn't see any restaurants to eat at. There is a shopping mall that is connected with the Nanjing East station, and a very nice supermarket in the basement.

To access the hotel from TPE airport, you can take a taxi for around 1250NT (about $38 at the time). It takes about 30-45 minutes. I think there is also a bus service from the airport called Evergreen that will drop you off at the Nanjing East station.

I stayed at the Westin Taipei a few weeks ago. It's a nice, modern hotel in the heart of Taipei. I was able to walk conveniently to our office, about five blocks away (took about 15-20 minutes) or take a cab for about 5 minutes.

Upon arrival, I asked if they would be wiling to upgrade me to the Executive Club floor. (I'm a Gold member.) They said I could upgrade to a Westin Workout room with Executive Club access for an additional NT$1,500 per night. I was tired after a long flight and decided to spring for it. Definitely a nice benefit of having the treadmill and workout weights, DVDs, etc. right in the room. In fact, I had more or less a suite to myself. Very nice! The view from the window, however, could have been better. Basically from one window I looked out onto a parking lot, and from the window on the other side of the room I looked onto the balcony of the apartments across the way ... so I could watch families and old men hang out playing, smoking, whatever.

The Executive Club is alright, definitely large enough with three separate seating areas so you don't feel like you're sitting on top of other guests. The food selection at breakfast appeared vast at first, but really was not all that great. I was disappointed in the lack of hot drinks -- everything was self-serve and blah (tea from a bag, espresso from a crappy machine, etc.). In the evenings, they had 3-4 hot dishes from which to choose, but there did not seem to be much variety from one evening to another. There was no wine in the evenings from what I could tell.

One night we ate at the Shanghainese restaurant in the basement, which was very good! We had one of the tasting menus. Service was impeccable.

Overall a good stay and I would go there again.
