Within the last twelve years we have been regular visitors to Venice and tried many hotels in the city or on the Lido island. The Hotel des Bains has become our favourite place due to its great location on the Lido island (access to beach and swimming-pool), and the easy connection to downtown Venice through their boat shuttle from the Excelsior hotel.
The atmosphere at the hotel is very special. The \"Death in Venice\" film was shot there by Luchino Visconti. Since this hotel is only open between April and October, we have only seen it under the sunshine (no fog!)
We know that some people like modern equipments, but this old-fashioned place (even with some "scars" although the hotel seems to be carefully maintained) has more charm to our eyes than an ultra-modern building with all the latest electronic tools. Rooms are spacious, and as time goes by, we get larger ones each time!!! Bathroom equipment is modern, and the A/C does work!
Buffet breakfast is more than excellent (good choice and good quality items), and is regularly refilled. You will even find coffee to your liking (espresso or "American" style). Restaurant is good too, but rather overpriced (even for Venice).
My only complaint will be about mosquitoes hanging around the swimming-pool in the park... They definitely love me! :-( Another hint: year after year you mostly find the same staff (waiters, receptionists, maids). Stability may be another indicator about the reasons why this place is rather magic.
