We arrived in San Antonio and rented a car for the short drive into town last August 2006. (We didn't end up using the car much, so if I went back again, I would probably just take the public bus from the airport.) It didn't take long and before long we were pulling into the driveway at the Westin Riverwalk San Antonio. The driveway into the hotel was packed and the valets looked a little frazzled. They did not offer to carry our bags into the hotel for us -- maybe because we were driving a compact rental car. I was a bit annoyed, but Mary pushed me to forget about it and go check-in. Valet parking was around $25, I think, per day.
The lobby area was also very busy; which probably has to do with the front desk being rather small with so much volume coming through here. (The hotel did calm down a bit after a day or two; so it's not always this busy!) Upon arrival, we were welcomed warmly by the front desk and offered some chocolates. This was a great touch. We were offered a Plat upgrade to a junior suite on the sixth floor with a balcony.
The furnishings in the room were great -- very modern with a southern/Texan twist. Of course, the Heavenly beds were so great! The bathroom was marble. I did have a beef with housekeeping. They came around in the morning and rapped loudly on our doors. We were trying to sleep in, so I answered it and told them to come back later. It couldn't have been more than 30 minutes later and someone was knocking on our door again!
Besides the busy valets and the eager housekeepers, the rest of the staff at the hotel were fantastic. Consistent smiling and offering to help. We had breakfast downstairs at the nice buffet ($16) and the service and food quality was top-notch. In the afternoon, the hotel hosted some Latin music in the lobby with coffee, cookies and other small snacks. We also spent some time at the roof-top pool, which was great, if not a little small. The lobby has some great nook and crannies to sit and relax -- one night I grabbed some drinks and cigars with a couple buddies out on one of the covered patio areas with comfy chairs overlooking the river. A great evening.
Next time you're at the Westin, be sure to ask for a room on a higher floor. This was my second time here, and I remember from the first time that there was a lot of "noise bleed" into the room from the road noise outside. It wasn't bad on the sixth floor, but if you're sensitive to that you may want to keep this in mind.
This is a great property if you want to be downtown San Antonio with access to the Riverwalk and the Alamo. Keep in mind that the Sheraton in San Antonio is closer to the Riverwalk than the Westin. Otherwise, for relaxation, check out the Westin La Cantera resort.

We stayed here for three nights a few weeks ago. Rooms were great, not as small as other downtown hotels I've stayed at. Noise, as the OP noted was a problem when windows were open, but otherwise we didn't notice much. I agree about the lines at the front desk too -- there were only ever two people staffed there that I could tell and this always had it backed up. They should encourage people to check-out from their rooms (maybe provide SPG point incentive to do so?). Don't park at valet parking again, though -- there's much cheaper parking across the street at closer to $10/night. (Although I'm not sure you get in/out priveleges...) Overall a very good hotel with easy access to everything San Antonio might have to offer!
