Burning Tree. Photo by AGorilla. This hotel is conveniently located five minutes off I-95, just north of NYC. Within minutes of the hotel is plenty of shopping and restaurants/bars.

The hotel is clearly old, as indicated by the room design (very small bathrooms with sinks outside) and architecture. The furnishings are more modern and seemingly new. There's free internet access using one of four laptops in the large lobby. Ample parking is available in an attached garage although there's a $6/night fee for using it.

Check-in was unimpressive. There were four staff behind the desk and nobody in line. Not wanting to be presumptuous, I waited for one of the four to acknowledge me and call me over from the roped line. That took a momement before somebody decided to check me in although she asked questions while the person standing next to her typed in the information.

SPG.com boasts of 448 newly renovated rooms. As I exited the elevator, it was noted as a non-smoking floor. There were clearly marked SPG rooms. Despite my status, I was not assigned a designated SPG room.

The room I was assigned was a one of the newly renovated room, as I determined from the modern furniture and Sheraton Sleeper Bed. However, as recent as the renovation, this room had been a smoking room. The room reeked of cigarettes, the windows did not open, and the a/c only added to the problem. I note the room had recently been smoking because the new furniture and carpet had burns in it, as well as the sink area.

Due to tight time constraints, I was not able to address this with the front desk and so, in their defense, they did not have the opportunity to remedy the situation. That said, nobody (status or otherwise) should be assigned such a room as non-smoking until it is thoroughly cleaned and refurbished. (An email sent to customer service resulted in a 1000 points for not getting a SPG room and zero acknowledgement of the real problem.)

Would I stay here again? Doubtful. There's a Westin five minutes away that I'd try first. I did get an excellent, weekend internet rate. I might return for the right price but only if I called the day before to speak to the front desk about making sure I got a room that had always been non-smoking, not that anyone should be assigned the room I got.

I am here (at the Sheraton Stamford) and I wish I'd chosen the 4P Norwalk. I checked in at 3pm and the desk agent asked what I'd like as my Platinum amenity, when I asked what's available she began with 2 beers, a free movie or 200 Starpoints ?? I quickly corrected her, and she seemed certain I was wrong, but I told her merely, "I'll take the points". I then asked if I was upgraded and she said yes, I was on the Club floor--my room 5067 faced into the inner courtyard and had 2 lights not working. I called down and was told they could upgrade me to a junior suite (why didn't they do that originally??) The halls are dated, carpet dirty and doors have multiple scuff marks and while the rooms have the new Sheraton furniture, it is nothing to write home about. My new room 4085 a junior suite, still overlooked the inner lobby, but was larger with a big seating area with tv, table and workstation. There is no separation between the 2 rooms, but it is large. There isn't much around the hotel within walking distance except for a mini strip mall with a Marshall, CVS, Bed Bath & Beyond etc. No place that I saw to eat, so I came back to the hotel. Looking at the dining room menu (same prices as room service), I saw chicken with angel hair pasta for $25, Short Ribs - $31, NY Sirloin $38.50 & Spaghetti & Meatballs -$22. Now, yes I'm on an expense account, and yes I'm from NYC and am used to high prices, but these seemed a bit steep for the locale-- but then again there really is no other choice, unless you want to drive somewhere. I then went into the Club Lounge where there were some sodas & water out at 5:30, they brought out 2 appitizers (couldn't figure out what they were, except they were greasy and fried) a bit later, but the room was very crowded, so I just came back to my room (There is no complimentary beer & wine as at the Westin Stamford). The reason I'm really dissappointed with this place is that with the Westin Stamford moving over to the Hilton family, and my needing to stay overnight in southern CT at least once a week, I was hoping that this would be a good alternative to the 4P Norwalk, especially given that the Hartford Sheraton is an equally dismal place.
