The Westin Ottawa is a grand hotel right downtown. It overlooks the main square of city with sweeping views of Parliament and other interesting architectural eye candy. The Sheraton Ottawa, in fact, is just a few blocks away. The Westin is walking distance from anything in the compact downtown, which is a plus relative to the Sheraton property in Ottawa. Plus, the Westin is connected to the convention center and the Rideau Centre mall, which can help you avoid the freeeeezing temperatures in Canada during the winter!
Upon check-in, my SPG Platinum status got me a room upgrade to a city view room on the Executive Floor without being prompted to ask. The check-in staff was cheery and answered some questions about where to grab a bite to eat later. That would be my only contact with the staff until check-out later tomorrow. I took the elevator up to my room. It was larger than a typical Sheraton room and welll-appointed. Thankfully, nothing was glaringly missing and nothing surprisingly included. Just a hotel room. The furniture seemed a bit dated and chinky relative to other Westin properties I've stayed at.
The fitness center is a full-on gym and also has the great view. The equipment was in tip-top shape and I hit it up for a run in the morning after a full night's sleep in the Heavenly Bed. Overall a great stay.

I had a mixed experience as a Gold staying here. Even though the hotel wasn't full - no upgrade was offered and the view is only great on one side of the hotel - so make sure you're not looking onto the unattractive "other" side. On the other hand, staff seemed well trained and promises were kept!
