Westin Horton's Obelisk. Photo by ellison. The best aspect of the Westin Horton Plaza is its location, perched at the edge of the happening Gaslamp District and attached to a mall with upscale shops. So, when we arrived and dumped our bags in the room, we immediately went out for a bite to eat. But that's not what you want to know about, is it!! The cab ride from the airport was pretty quick and only $12 or so. We were welcomed with a smile by the check-in lady. Before you can say "starwood preferred guest" we were in our room with a view of the bay (no upgrade here, we paid for it!). The voice in the elevator was cool.

The room was pretty big from what I'm used to seeing in big cities and stocked with Starbucks coffee. It had a floofy Heavenly Bed, a desk and a divan. Thankfully, the Westin had provided some guidebooks to the area as my wife had forgotten to pack ours the night before. Doh! We used them to scout out our moves for the next few days, and tapped the concierge downstairs for some advice. Every night the maid would come by to turn down our beds and set chocolates out for us.

After breakfast, we sauntered up to the fitness center and the pool area. The pool is not large so we probably wouldn't be spending much time up there. My wife was raving about the gym though with its large screens on all the equipment.

We hopped on the Historic Bus Tour that stopped right in front of the hotel and were treated to a sight-seeing trek around the city. The next day we checked out no problems.

Overall, the hotel experience was efficient and most above-par in every way. I suppose this is pretty standard for a Westin! If I'm ever in San Diego again, I would probably stay here or check out the W.

There is a great little cafe for breakfast and lunch about a half a block from the hotel. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name but I'm sure people in the hotel know it or you can just walk around. It's on the street that runs north/south just north of and west of the hotel - I think it has a European name. Sorry I can't remember more details.

I've stayed here twice, both times for 4 nights. I find the service to be excellent although not terribly warm. I had the concierge about places to walk to for dinner and then headed up to my room. About 15 minutes later it started to rain. About two minutes later the phone rang. It was the concierge wanting to let me know that the front desk had umbrellas to loan if I didn't have one with me. The small internet coffee shop off the lobby is nice and very friendly. On my last night I asked about using the computer and printer and they asked if it was to print out a boarding pass. (Good guess!) When I said yes, they said there'd be no charge since I'd be a good diet coke customer all week. Nice.
