Starwood has four properties in Honolulu. The Princess is the only Category 3 hotel, and it shows. The others are Category 4. Some might go as far to call it a dump, but I'll be nice and call it "dated."
The check-in experience was fine, although there was a bit of a line. The lobby rambles, with a mish-mash of shops, restaurants, open-air, pool access, lanais and hallways with some artwork. Nothing wrong with it, but ceratinly not the seamless, thematic interior design of most Starwood resort properties. But, since my time in the lobby area was going to be minimal, I didn't overly sweat the aesthetics. When I arrived at the front desk, an upgraded room was given to me, so I didn't have to beg or demand it... just the way it should be.
As a Platinum, I was upgraded to the largest of three towers, all the way on the top floor, 29 stories up. My room had gorgeous views of the ocean and Diamond Head. There was the Platinum amenity in the room waiting for me: a gift basket with chocolates and fruits! At turn down, even more chocolates.
Room itself was more than acceptable, if not from a bygone era. Balcony furniture had 1980s look, but it was comfortable. Apparently, Sheraton Princess guests can hike or take a bus a few blocks to use Sheraton Waikiki beach and fitness center. The Sheraton Waikiki is much more expensive, closer to beach and supposedly more modern.
It's worth noting that the property itself is a block off the beach, so you will have to walk across the street to get there. This is a little inconvenient. Apparently, the Sheraton Waikiki or Royal Hawaiian are much nicer. Although, if you plan on spending minimal time in your room beyond sleeping and showering, I'd save the extra money and stay at the Princess instead of the Sheraton Waikiki. This hotel is good value.
