Thailand Hotel - Sheraton Chiang Mai Hotel. Photo by pitchaxyz.AS OF APRIL 1, 2007, THIS HOTEL HAS BEEN REBRANDED AS A HOLIDAY INN.Having recently spent a lot of time at the Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket on tsunami business, I thought I would try the Sheraton Chiang Mai for a business/leisure trip. The property is classified as a SPG Category 1.

The Sheraton Chiang Mai is not centrally located. In fact, it is about a 10 minute drive from the downtown area. The hotel is in a tired old building that looks to have been built around 20 years ago. Nevertheless, pickup service from the airport was efficient and professional. The vehicle was clean and comfortable.

Check-in was uneventful. As I'm only a regular SPG member, I didn't expect special VIP treatment, but my membership was not even recognised. The receptionists were detached and not particularly friendly. I will note that the Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket has always made a point of welcoming back repeat guests, and even prints this fact on your key card holder!

The rooms are a sad affair. The decor is very dated, the control panel near the bed dates from what appears to be the 1970s. I'm actually having trouble writing this review as the room was so absolutely unremarkable, I can't remember anything about it! During my staf, I didn't use many facilities other than the restaurant and lobby lounge. Service at the restaurant was average and again, unremarkable (which is surprising for Thailand).

Checkout was a bit odd, in that I wasn't given any receipt for my room stay. I had booked via SPG.com with my credit card, but when I asked for some kind of receipt, the cashier looked positively flustered. I speak fluent Thai with no accent, so this was not the issue. Not too much to ask, I think!

All in all, I would rate my stay as very average, bordering on disappointing. At US$65, it may not seem expensive to foreigners, but I could have got something much nicer in a no-name hotel for half the price. In my opinion, the Sheraton Chiang Mai is not really worthy of the Starwood brand; it should be sold or given a major renovation.

You must have a crystal ball. This hotel became a Holiday inn on the 1st of April this year.
I stayed there in August last year, I wouldn't judge it as harshly as you seem to but I agree with many of the points you make.
