Having just returned from a stay at the W Montreal, I thought I could transcribe some of my experiences here on StarwoodLobby. If you are looking for a true "W experience" this hotel fits the bill in every way.
From the cab, I walked into a great lobby -- modern, yet inviting. The service was upbeat and friendly as the staff swarmed around me to take care of my needs. They offered me coffee or bottled water while I waited for a check-in agent to be available. One oddity: I had to sign a waiver at check-in about what activities I would "agree" not to do in the room (cooking, open flames, loud parties, etc.). Strange. The check-in agent was efficient, offered the Platinum amenity (a black fabric W bag) promptly and gave me a choice of four newspapers to be delivered in the morning.
I had a Mega Room booked and when I arrived was told that they only offered upgrades from Spectacular rooms to Mega rooms, even for Platinum members. Not wanting to pay CDN$50, I opted to stay with the Mega Room. After having to get my keys swapped out twice for not working appropriately, I finally got access to the room. I'm not one for great views from a hotel room (who spends time in their hotel room during the day anyway?), so I wasn't disappointed to see an office building looming through my windows. For those who are not into the "hip" W scene, this hotel room might not have been your cup of tea. For example, there was no wall separating the bathroom from the bedroom (the toilet, thankfully, had its own little room), just an electric blue curtain. The bathroom with a Rain 15-foot-high shower-head felt fantastic in the morning; although I stepped out of the shower into a pool of water. Anyway, I could see how some people might not like the feel of a hotel like this without any privacy. But the world is full of Marriott's and Hiltons for you all! The bed was very comfortable and draped in a light down comforter with a fake mink cover.
I used the concierge twice during the stay (Patrick?). His knowledge of the city and its restaurants was impeccable.
The location of the hotel is decent. Old Montreal is southeast, within 2-3 blocks walking distance. There is a metro station right outside the front door and underground access to the Palais de Congres. My friends and I took a cab that night to Sherbrooke area that evening.
The best part? Our bill was correct when I checked out -- something you increasingly have to double-check, I'm finding.

You must have been lucky. The staff at the W Montreal were horrid when I was there. And I had the same issue with the keys!

Did not have problems with the keys. The rooms are very nice, although definitely not for a family. Booked wonderful room and upgraded to a "mega". Although I think the difference between the two is very slight. I am SPG Plat. The Wunderbar is always packed with lots of good looking people.
All the "suites" are located on the 10th floor.
A bit disappointed that they charged me for the soaps for the bath tub.

Having just returned from a long weekend in Montreal and a stay at the W - we LOVED the hotel! A true W experience. Staff was excellent and scored an upgrade as SPG Plat. The level of service was unbeatable from Welcome, Whatever/Whenever, Concierge, Valet / Bellman! Was excellent all around. We were there for the last weekend of the 1st World Outgames and Montreal Pride and were warmly welcomed and always personally greeted when coming or going from the hotel. Definitely on the list for a return visit!
